A workshop for writers who’ve considered getting behind a microphone, and storytellers who’ve considered writing their stories down. For writers, telling your story on stage helps you to distill it into its most fundamental pieces, while also giving you a useful tool for engaging with real-life audiences. For storytellers, writing your story helps you develop nuance, while giving you a path to reach a broader audience online or in print. Each mode informs the other, and mastering both makes you undeniable.
Our study will focus on crafting for both the stage and the page, with particular focus given to what can only be done in each form, and how to use experiences with one to leverage creative growth in the other. Students will have the chance to workshop a stage story and a written story, ideally different takes on the same narrative. The class will end with a seventh session, a live storytelling show at a location TBD.
Tim Manley is a writer, storyteller, and educator. He is the co-creator, co-director, and writer of The Feels, an online show about a bi guy with too many feelings; the writer and illustrator of Alice in Tumblr-land, published by Penguin and optioned for TV by 20th Century Fox; a storyteller featured on HBO's Girls, The Moth Radio Hour, Gimlet's Surprisingly Awesome, and in his FringeFAVE solo show, Feelings; and an educator with New York City's Showcase Schools program and elsewhere.
