1-Day Online Translation Workshop: Literary Translation Manuscript Check

Much of professional literary translation as it happens on the page can be learned through the workshopping and editing processes. In this workshop, we will talk about how to make sure your translation has the necessary characteristics for a translation sample used for professional submissions, such as an impression of control and deep comprehension of the source work as well as the general texture of what the translation would feel like when completed. Then we will examine your literary translation sample (submitted and shared with the class a week prior to class) as a class, providing verbal and written feedback, and discuss, through a publishing perspective, what possible issues can come up with editors and readers.

This workshop is best suited to translators who are already at work on a project and have some prior workshop experience. Class is open to writers working in all languages.

*If you’re enrolling in two or more Don’t Translate Alone classes, email us at classes@catapult.co and we’ll send you a coupon for 15% off each DTA class!

Class meetings will be held over video chat, using Zoom accessed from your private class page. While you can use Zoom from your browser, we recommend downloading the desktop client so you have access to all platform features.

Testimonials

"Anton has a wonderful way about him which builds your confidence as a translator, whilst making you critically aware of where/how you can improve your text. He has a wealth of anecdotes from his rich career of working with a range of editors and publishers, which has always helped me when I find myself unsure of how to proceed with a particular situation, whether it be a contract or a difficult conversation with an editor."

Sawad Hussain translator

“Anton brings to every workshop that rare combination of wit, charm, intelligence, and deep knowledge and insight into his field.”

Wei Ting novelist

"Hur’s chameleonic translation is key to the success of this aspect of the book: he slithers between the futuristic and the folkloric with ease, while helping the collection maintain a cohesive atmosphere."

ASYMPTOTE JOURNAL

"Sharp, lucid"

PEN AMERICA

"Anton is a great person to have in any workshop - he makes astute, critical observations about your texts, whilst also being encouraging and supporting others to develop their craft in their own way. He also really jokes and makes the workshop fun and funny."
