Today Is Your Wedding Day

Today is your wedding day, and it’s weird I’m not there. It’s weird because we were so close. Before we weren’t anymore. Sitting in Starbucks for hours until they locked their doors. Silly accents at a hole in the wall coffee shop in Hicksville. Car rides to Fire Island and listening to the Cranberries. Phone conversations till our throats ran dry. Bowls of ice cream at your house on sweaty summer nights. Commiserating over botched romances and unavailable patterns and reassuring one another that we will get there. Eventually.

We used to really be there for each other.

Today is your wedding day, and I know it makes sense I’m not there. People drift, feelings get hurt. The year after we graduated college was rough. But I don't try burn bridges or cling to fire. In time, I let what has to pass simply pass, until all that’s left are some memories coated in what’s not supposed to be.

Today is your wedding day, and I saw pictures posted online. You look stunning and your dress is gorgeous and you’re glowing.

Today is your wedding day, and I genuinely wish you a lifetime of love and happiness.
